Mission and Outreach

Outreach1.jpg

At CHS our Mission & Outreach initiatives are a fundamental response to our Christian vocation and discipleship.  The Mission & Outreach committee is comprised of parishioners who help determine the organizations we support through our fund-raising activities and ministry.  CHS supports more than 50 organizations locally, nationally and internationally.  What follows is a list of programs and initiatives that help raise funds for our Mission & Outreach actions.

Proceeds from our Mission & Outreach initiatives support more than 50 organizations.

CHS Pantry

Outreach2.jpg

The Church of the Holy Spirit maintains a pantry for individuals in need of emergency food who are either referred to us by the discretion of our clergy or by the Shields Township office.  The pantry relies on donations from parishioners and from local food drives. See the News & Announcments section of this website, or The Witness, for a weekly list of non-perishable food in short supply. We encourage parishioners to bring food items with them when they attend services. During the week, food may be left outside the pantry door, located in the west end of the building.  Volunteers are needed on a monthly basis to help sort food and pack up emergency bags.

PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter)

Dedicated parishioners at CHS provide nutritious, home-made meals and sack lunches for needy individuals in Waukegan.  Volunteers are needed to help make meals in the CHS kitchen, make sack lunches, and transport the food to shelters, plus set up beds and linens for overnight guests.

Community Meals

Several times a year at Christ Church, Waukegan, volunteers work from noon until 4 p.m. preparing and serving a full, hot meal for more than 100 individuals.  More help is always needed in this important ministry.   Look in the News & Announcements section of this website, or The Witness for the next call for volunteers.  We usually need 12 to 15 volunteers each time dinner is prepared.

Resale Ministry

The resale ministry at CHS takes place in two locations:   Second Time Around, which is located in the west wing of our building, and Repeat Performance, which is located at 808 Glen Flora in Waukegan.  The focus of the resale ministry is to provide good, gently worn clothing for all ages at very reasonable prices to those who otherwise might not be able to afford it.  We also share our bounty with Cathedral Shelter and other charitable organizations.  Parishioners are needed to sort and sell clothing.  Clothing donations are welcome and encouraged.

Christkindl Markt

The Christkindl Markt is a pre-Advent old-world custom where Christians prepare for Christmas. At CHS we offer this annual festival and boutique during November.  he staff of our Missions Possible Bookstore search throughout the year for Christian items for sale including cr'ches from many lands, Advent calendars, wreaths, and other Christmas decorations. All proceeds support the CHS mission and outreach programs.

Native American Partnership

The Native American Partnership at CHS is embarking on its 22nd year with St. Michael's Mission, located on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The annual trip takes place in July  when 40 to 60 CHS members travel to St. Michael's by car or plane. Although our schedule consists of running a Vacation Bible School and work crew projects, our main objective is to strengthen our Christian Partnership while also being a part of their community - physically, mentally and spiritually.  CHS participants have found this ministry to be a transformative experience.  New members are welcome and encouraged.

Nuestra Senora Partnership

The Nuestra Se'ora de Guadalupe/CHS Partnership committee is made up of members from CHS and our Spanish speaking sister parish, Nuestra Se'ora de Guadalupe in Waukegan.  We meet the second Saturday every other month to discuss ways that our two parishes can work together toward extended and shared ministry, cultural awareness and community outreach.
