Worship Support Ministires
Worship is at the heart of all we do, and we could not carry out our worship without the support of hundreds of parishioners who volunteer time. Are you interested in serving in the context of the worship service? We invite you to consider serving in any of the following ways.
Acolytes
Acolytes are the torch bearers who carry the light of the Gospel to the people of the Church. Clergy and Head Crucifers carry the processional crosses and assume leadership roles by directing the actions of the younger acolytes during the Gospel procession, and setting the table for Communion. Student acolytes progress to Crucifers with experience, training, and clergy approval. Acolytes and Crucifers are used at the 9 and 11 a.m. services and generally serve every 4 to 6 weeks. One Crucifer is scheduled for every 7:30 am service and adults are especially needed. Acolyte/Crucifer training occurs several times throughout the year and takes very little time. Anyone from 6th grade to adult is eligible to participate in this important liturgical ministry.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is a group of about 40 volunteer women of the church who are responsible for the behind-the-scenes activity for all services, including weddings and funerals at CHS. This devoted group works all year long in teams that are scheduled semi-monthly. If you are interested in joining the Altar Guild, please contact the Rev. Jay Sidebotham or the Rev. Wendy Lane.
Chalice Bearers
Chalice Bearers assist in the distribution of Communion. Our Chalice Bearers are trained here at CHS and licensed through the Diocese of Chicago. The training and licensing process is offered several times throughout the year, and this ministry is open to sophomores in high school and older. Contact The Rev. Lay Readers
Lay Readers help offer the Liturgy of the Word in our corporate worship services: reading the scripture lessons and leading the Prayers of the People. Training is offered several times throughout the year, and assistance with public reading is provided to all those who feel called to this ministry. Readers aged 13 and older are encouraged to participate. Contact the Rev. Jay Sidebotham at Jsidebotham@chslf.org
Ushers & Greeters
Parishioners are encouraged to volunteer as ushers and greeters at any of the Sunday services at CHS. Interested persons will be trained and may be asked to usher six or more times a year. Ushers have three important duties: to help people feel welcome in church, to assist in collecting offerings, and to help facilitate the flow of people as they receive Communion.
Greeters help to extend a warm welcome to all who come through the doors on Sunday mornings. They have a particular ministry to visitors and guests, welcoming them in the name of Christ, and providing practical help in finding their way around the building.
